Arsene Wenger conceded his team were second best to Barcelona as the Gunners went down 4-1 in the Champions League quarter-final to the Catalan giants.
Lionel Messi scored all four goals for the home side and Wenger admitted his team had lost out to the world's best player.
"Congratulations to Barcelona, they were better than us," Wenger told Sky Sports.
"For me he [Messi] is the best player in the world by some distance.
"He is not always in the game, but when he is, he is really dangerous.
"Once he is on the run with the ball he is unstoppable. He's the only player in the world who can change direction at such a pace."
The Gunners went 1-0 up through Nicklas Bendtner, but Messi's four goals put the game to bed for the Champions League holders and Wenger rued his side's sloppy defending.
"At 1-0 we had good counter attacking [moves] but made the wrong choice and gave them the goals," Wenger added.
"We battled. We started well and had chances to come back at 3-1. Nicklas [Bendtner] hit the post, I don't think he was offside but we missed a few chances."
